Will Walking Prepare me for Labour and Birth?

Walking is a nice and easy exercise and is recommended to be carried on all through the pregnancy. There are measurable benefits to light exercising like walking during pregnancy and the studies have proved them to be healthy.

Walking will keep you refreshed, healthy and active while taking good care of your baby. It helps to bring the baby nice and down, ready for birth by term end, at the same time exerting pressure on the cervix to open it enough for the easy dilation process.  However, it is utterly important to consult your gynaecologist before you actually take up walking as a routine exercise.

Walking on one side supports the expecting mother for labour and dilation, however, in case where the baby is not too low or close to the cervix, it hardly makes any difference. Furthermore, for mothers whose babies are too close to the cervix before time, walking can be unsafe rather than help in birthing. Also, it is strictly recommended that while walking, if you feel any sort of pain, especially in the abdominal area, do consult your doc at the earliest.

Walking is, surely a stroke of luck for pregnant women as if you walk regularly, you will feel good, look good, give birth by far and get back to your actual shape quicker.

However, there are certain cautions you must follow if you decide to take a walk regularly:

  • Eat more and eat right
  • Wear loose clothes and  a support bra
  • Stop and rest when you feel out of breath
  • Avoid walking in hot and humid weather
