So You Know Your Child Is a Genius

Every child is special and gifted. Children grow and acquire exceptional skills that mature with age and practice; and stay with them for life. But there are some kids with gifted intelligence that make them stand apart from the rest. Scientists say that intellectual giftedness can neither be altered, nor improved with personal efforts; but were they really aware of how personal aptitude needs to be adapted to give it the right channel for right growth and implementation?  Well, I am no scientist, and hold no license in child care, but what I observed around is a deep science in itself that the nature edifies.

Identifying intellectual giftedness

Some children are gifted with extraordinary computation abilities that let them carry out complex mathematical calculations in a jiffy! Such children are most liable to become mathematicians and computer wizards by the time they mature. Children with such abilities have unique needs as far as exposure and curriculum is concerned. It is important to recognize their intelligence level and give them appropriate puzzles and problem-solving queries. The finest way of making best of this ability would be to give the child more and more practice and exposure to basic math, and the day won’t be far when you see your child find out simple formulae to design his own calendar!

Unusual observation ability also is recognized as a genius trait in children when they are able to observe and perceive more than what is expected at their age. The finest example of this can be seen in toddlers who learn to play stacking ring game when they are as young as only 7-8 months old, although the toy comes with age group recommendation of 24 months to 4 years.

Children with exceptional observational abilities are often good at memory too (both long-term as well as interim). You’d often find such kids remember their old dresses so fondly, when you are sure you don’t have any related picture around. They’d also remember the way to the place you’ve taken them before even if it’s been quite a long time and they were very young then. These are a few signals that they exhibit for you to realize their potential and give them a tougher test. You’ll be amazed to note that they’ll pass all your tests and flaunt their perfect memory and observation! For kids as young at 24 months, you say it once, and they’d follow it and remind it back to you a million times when you’d have probably forgotten it.

Exceptional imaginative abilities in young children also are a prominent sign of a gifted child. Often, a 24 year old child composes his own song and hums it all day long. Next day, they have another song prepared! After a year, you’d hear them make up stories; stories that make better sense than what usual fairy tales do! They’d sometimes quietly fit into the role of Cinderella, and narrate the story to you, posing to be an unhappy girl who is not given a personal computer! It is very important to channelize this imagination, before they start swinging between The Cinderella Story and Al-Qaida that most of our news channels howl about all day!

Readers, I am sure most parents would have agreed to all that you read by now, and have realized that your kids have some exceptional skills and abilities that deserve quite a lot of importance. Again, every child is special, and children are at the most critical developmental phase right now, and it is essential to nurture them with as much care and attention as they are worthy of. Encourage the children to develop physically and mentally; give them as much exposure to the outer world as possible, they are safe to face the world as long as you stand by them until they are mature enough to take their steps at their own.
